Chromecast TV Dongle Unveiled by Google

Every summer Google unveils new Android goodies to the masses, and this week brought several new products into the spotlight like the new Nexus 7 tablet, and Chromecast, a new device that lets you stream content from your mobile directly to your TV.

There are many ways to stay connected these days, and streaming content to television sets wirelessly has become a popular way to go. Chromecast will let you do just that as long as your television has an HDMI slot and Wi-Fi network to connect to. You simply need to plug the Chromecast dongle into any free HDMI port on your TV, and through the magic of the internet you’ll be able to stream content straight from your laptop using the chrome browser, or from your smartphone and tablet.

As for the content, Chromecast will work with Netflix, Chrome, YouTube, and Google Play. You’ll be able to adjust the volume, queue up videos, and you can even turn off your device once you get things going as Chromecast can pull from the cloud. If you dig music, they’ve got you covered there as well with Pandora and Google Play Music. The selection may seem limited at the moment, but the SDK has been released so the list will grow quickly.

Chromecast isn’t the first TV dongle to be released, but a few key things make it extremely exciting. Being able to cast from the web to the television really opens things up as folks will now be able to stream virtually anything to the TV including services like Hulu. One would assume that mobile games may come into the picture as well – if you can access specific apps in the Play Store, why not certain games? Nothing’s been mentioned yet, but with rumors of a Google Gaming Console floating around one has to wonder if you’ll be able to game in a limited capacity with Chromecast.

If you’re wondering when you can get this miraculous device, you may be in for a bit of a wait as it’s only $35 and is selling like hotcakes. The Chromecast is currently available through the Google Play, Amazon, and Best Buy. Amazon & Best Buy are already sold out, and Google Play has the shipping date as 3-4 weeks.
