BBM for Android plagued by thousands of fake reviews

BlackBerry-Logo-Mobile-2012

BlackBerry announced the public release of its BBM for Android a few days back and within just 24 hours of launch garnered over 10 million downloads – a feat which does invite a round of applause. But it seems that everything colorful is not a rainbow as Google Play page of BBM for Android has thousands of reviews which seem to be out of place and fake for the fact that they contain the same review text.

The review text reads “Thank you so much blackberry team. I was waiting this app. Its really great user friendly and smooth.” This was first noticed by Blogger Terence Eden.

BlackBerry responded to Eden saying that it doesn’t have anything to do with the fake reviews and that they “do not approve of or condone such activities and are committed to working with Google to resolve this.”

Chances are that the 10 million download figure might be fake as well, but we will give BlackBerry the benefit of doubt here. However, chances are the all those who downloaded the app might not be actually using it or may not have even activated it. Since the news of the fake reviews first hit the web, users have make the review text a meme and there are those who are just flooding the Google Play BBM page with more of these just for the fun of it.

In an official statement to The Verge, BlackBerry said “We have been made aware of a number of potentially fake reviews of BBM for Android on Google Play, with ratings anywhere from one to five stars. We have no knowledge of how these reviews were created or populated.”

If BlackBerry wants to get in the clear, it will have to do more than just get rid of the fake reviews.
